Ioanna Vlachaki

4042 is a 218 sqm wellness space in the heart of Athens, designed by Ioanna Vlachaki Studio through a language of geometric clarity, material precision, and sculptural form. Modernist principles, traditional references, and contemporary construction methods come together through a restrained palette of wood, travertine, lacquered surfaces, stainless steel, fabric, and light.

Architecture, furniture, lighting, and custom constructions were developed as part of the same design process. Each element responds directly to its position, function, and relationship to the body, creating a continuous spatial system in which objects also define circulation and use.

Formerly an office, the existing building is characterized by large perimeter industrial-style openings that bring generous natural light and ventilation into the interior. The project retains the directness of this existing structure and introduces a new sequence of spaces with different degrees of openness and privacy.

The plan develops from the more communal areas at the perimeter towards the treatment rooms, changing areas, and quieter functions deeper within the space. Natural light, semi-transparent boundaries, curved surfaces, and tactile materials create a gradual transition between these different uses.

All constructions are custom-made and site-specific. Geometric volumes, integrated furniture, and built-in elements act as spatial reference points throughout the project.

At the entrance, a curved reception volume guides circulation into the space. Lacquered surfaces, natural oak, integrated storage, and fabric lighting establish the material language of the interior. In the waiting area, solid wood benches sit alongside travertine, stone tiles, and lacquered elements.

The manicure and pedicure stations draw from modernist, industrial, and Japanese construction references. White plywood with exposed edges and lacquered finishes makes the assembly of each object visible and gives the furniture a direct architectural presence.

Timber appears throughout the project in cabinetry, curved surfaces, integrated seating, and vertical slats. These elements filter natural light, define thresholds, and create a sense of rhythm across the interior.

At the centre of the project, the open-plan fitness area with Pilates equipment benefits from the large existing openings. Vertical timber slats mediate the relationship between the interior and the surrounding city, creating a softer and more private atmosphere.

A wooden arcade leads towards the treatment, sauna and changing areas. Constructed from solid timber battens, it forms a semi-transparent corridor shaped by repetition, light, shadow, and movement.

The wet areas are finished in warm-toned travertine tiles, timber counters, and stainless-steel details. Precise junctions and carefully designed custom elements give emphasis to craftsmanship and material clarity.

The massage room, designed for two users, includes built-in shelving, travertine details, linen lighting fixtures, and a custom oak cabinet with natural woven elements. The body and facial treatment rooms continue the same monochromatic palette and timber flooring, with minimal interventions that preserve the presence of natural light.

KL4042 is conceived as a sequence of geometric volumes, objects, thresholds, and material conditions. Architecture and custom furniture share the same formal language, creating an interior defined by clarity, tactility, and a close relationship between space, movement, and use.
